As a project manager, you deal with the authority versus responsibility dilemma. You are responsible for the success of your project, yet you have limited authority.

You are the boss, but you are also not the boss. Many of your team members will be motivated professionals. They are going to step up and do the right thing.

Once in a while, you find that you need to draw upon some type of power or influence to encourage someone to commit to your project and to completing their work.

When this is true, how do you know what form of power to use? If you are too authoritative, it may backfire, or damage morale. If you are too passive, you risk losing the respect you deserve.

You have options. The first step is to understand the forms of power available, and the next step is use the right approach for the scenario at hand.

This quick video gives you an overview of the forms of power and when to use them.

Wishing you every success,
